Maths Homework 15th January 2014

The work being produced in class has been absolutely fantastic! Our presentation and clarity of explanation has been improving every week. This week I am going to upload a copy of the best solution to this problem! Feel free to add your explanation as a comment as well though!

    32 x £6.50 = £208 per week
    1/10 of 208 = £20.8
    £20.8 + £50 + £60 = £130.8
    £208 - £130.8 = £77.2
    439 / 77.2 = 5.7 weeks
    Answer = 6 weeks

    Ashley earns:£6.50 per hour
    £6.50 x 32 = £208
She pays 1/10 for the tax and national insurance.
    1/10 of £208 = £20.8
    £208 - £20.8 = £187.2
She gives £50 to her family for her room and food.
    £187.2 - £50 = £137.2
She spends £60 on socialising, clothing etc.
    £137.2 - £60 = £77.2
    £77.2 x 6 = £463.2
It will take her six weeks to have enough money to pay for her holiday.

  4. Step 1: It says that Ashley works 32 hours a week at £6.50 and hour, so you do:
    £6.50 x 32 = £208. This means that she earns £208 in one week.

Step 2: If she pays one tenth of her weekly earnings in tax and national insurance (which she does), you have to find one tenth first:
    1/10 of £208 = £20.80.

Step 3: Take away the one tenth so you are left with what she has remaining after she has had it taken away:
    £208 - £20.80 = £187.20
    She now has £187.20

Step 4: She then gives £50 of her weekly earnings that are left (£187.20) to her family for her room and food:
    £187.20 - £50 = £137.20
    She now has £137.20 left.

Step 5: She spends £60 on socialising, clothing and other things:
    £137.20 - £60 = £77.20.
She now has £77.20 left. This is what she saves.

Step 6: If her trip to Portugal costs $439, and she has £77.20 left every week, she obviously won't be able to go straight away. To work out how many it'll take her to save enough money to go, you do:
£439 / £77.20 = 5.68652849741. Rounded to the nearest number, it would take her 6 weeks.

    1. An excellent explanation Pooja, why would we need to round up even if the answer was say 5.43?

  5. 32x£6.50=208%10=20.8 208-20.8=187.2-50=137.2-60=77.2
    439%77.2=6
So Ashley has to save up for six weeks R I SHY

  6. 1.) To start off with you have to multiply 32 hours by £6.50 which is equal to £208.
2.) For the tax and national insurance work, out one tenth of £208 which is £20.08.
3.) Now deduct all her outgoings which are: £20.08, £50 and £60. Your answer should be £130.08.
4.) Deduct £130.08 from £208. The answer should be £77.92.
    5.) Divide £439 by £77.92 which is 5.56.
That means it will take Ashley 5 and a half weeks to save her holiday money.
    DONE!

  9. First I'll read each sentence. It says that Ashley works for 32 hours
    step 1:32 x £6.50= £208 ,so now we've got that
step 2:£208 x 7= £1456 ,after that what do you think I will do next?
step 3:£208/10=£20.80 BUT that is not the answer we have to -the answer £208-£20.80 = £ 187.20
step 4:She also says that she gives £50 shall we do that ? £187.20 - £50=£137.20
step 5:Let's see what she also says next .she said that she -£60.
    £137.20-£60= £77.20
step 6:Now Ashley has £77.20even more she needs money to go on holidayto Portugal it cost £437 to go.Let's find out .
    £437/£77.20=6
I've (I mean we) found out that it will take 6 weeks to pay the holiday amount (£437).

  10. 32x6.50=£208 That's how much she earns a week, okay?
208/10=20.8 She pays £20.8 in tax and insurance.
60+50=110 She pays £110 pounds on family and socialising and clothing.
    110+20.8=130.8
208-130.8=77.2 She has £77.2 left to save for the holiday to Portugal.
We now have to find how many 77.2s go into 493, so we do this...
493/77.2=7 (you must round the awnser because you can't have 6.3860 weeks can you!)
Ashley must do 7 weeks of work to have enough money for here holiday to Portugal.

  11. First you must do £6.50 X 32. And it equals to £208. This is how much she earns every week. Now you must deduct the tax and national insurance. This is one tenth of the number which equals to £20.08. When you deduct it it is £187.20.Now you must deduct the other £110 which she spends on doing things. £187.20 - £110 = £77.20. This is how much she saves every week. Now we must divide 439 by 77.20 = 6. You would have to round the number up to 6 because you need to find out haw many weeks she has to save up.

  12. Dear Mr Troy,

    Here is my answer.

Ashley works for 32 hours a week at £6.50 per hour.

    So her total earning per week = 32 x 6.50 = £208.00.

She pays tax and national insurance with 1/10 of her weekly earnings, which is £20.80.

Then she pays £50.00 for her family, room and food.

Finally, she pays £60.00 for socialising, clothing and other things

    So her total expenses per week = £20.80 + £50.00 + £60.00 = £130.80.

    Her savings per week= £208.00 - £130.80 = £77.20.

The holiday to Portugal costs £439.00.

So in order to be able to save up for the holiday she will need to work 439.00 ÷ 77.20 = 5.68 weeks.

In whole weeks, she will have to work 6 weeks.

  13. First you will need to work out Ashleys total earning per week.
She works 32 hours a week at £6.50 an hour.
So,you will need to times 32 by £6.50.
    32 x £6.50=£208.00.
So,her total earning per week is £208.00.
Then you will need to find out how much tax and national insurance she pays.
We know that it is 1/10 of her weekly earnings so we will have to find 1/10 of her weekly earnings.
1/10 of her weekly earnings is £20.80.
She also pays £50.00 for her family, food and room.
Finally, she pays £60.00 for socialising, clothing and other things.
    So,her total expenses for the week are:£20.80 + £50.00 + £60.00=£130.80.
Her savings per week will need to be worked out next.
To do that you will need to do this:£208.00-£130.00=£77.20
The holiday to Portugal costs £439.00.
Then to work out how many weeks Ashley will have to work to be able to afford the holiday you will need to work out £439.00 divided by £77.20=5.68 weeks.
In whole weeks, she will have to work for 6 weeks.

  16. To work out the answer to the given question, you will first need to work out Ashley's weekly earnings.
Ashley works for 32 hours a week and earns £6.50 per hour.
    32 x £6.50 = £208.00, so Ashley earns £208.00 weekly.
We know that she spends 1/10 of her weekly earnings on tax and national insurance payments. 1/10 of £208 is £20.80.
She then spends £50 on her family, room and food.
She also pays £60 on socialising, clothing and other things.
    After all he money that is spent, £208 - £20.80 - £50 -£60 = £77.20.
The holiday to Portugal that she wants to go on costs £439.00.
Therefore she doesn't have enough money to go immediately.
    £439.00 ÷ £77.20 = 5.6865284 and so on.
Seeing as we can't split a week into such small parts, we'll need to round it.
However, the number has to round up, even if the decimal number is less than 5 because otherwise there would be a shortage of money.
5.6865284 when rounded up gives the answer of 6.
Ashley will have to wait 6 weeks before she is able to afford the holiday to Portugal.

  18. We would have to round up because if she needed 5.43 (example)weeks, she would probably get paid at the end up the week. You would have to round it up, because there is still a small amount of time that she needs to pay for the whole trip. She can't really split the week into parts. If she does. she will be short of some money.
